Match Report

Captains Cup Final

Written by Harvey Baird

It was a typical start to the season with over 18 players requesting to play so the stand down list was in force. Fortunately for me, as being captain for the final the stand down list did not apply for this week (roll on next week).

As Neil and I are part of the defenders union we both thought this could be quite a close affair with limited chances and goals (and Tom up front).

As with any new season getting the right mix of players can be difficult, you know what the existing players can do and you need to mix in the new players and positions. As it turned out I think I got the mix right and Neil was not quite so fortunate.

The game was quite tight in the first quarter and the whites could have been two up in the earlier stages as we were exposed a couple of times on the break with Reuben playing winger instead of full back. After a telling off and being told to hold position the yellows gradually started to take control of the game with the midfield four creating a number of opportunities for Davo O, who for some reason decided not to take them. Was it going to be another one of those nights, like the semi final against Blake.

Eventually the pressure finally broke and we managed to get two goals in front. The whites were still dangerous especially from corners and throws, as the height and size of the team made for difficult defending. Delivery was the problem for the whites, as demonstrated by Mike who drilled a perfect corner along the floor for the four attackers all well over 6ft.

As the whites began to run out of energy chasing some of the yellows slick passing moves, the goals began to flow. Highlights were a couple of brilliant passing moves for goals and Cush curling a shot into the top corner.

To be fair to the whites they kept going even when Anthony went off injured and Tom finally got a goal, I would like to say it was a screamer but he was falling over backwards and hit his foot for the goal (I am not sure you noticed but Everton scouts were at the game).

The final score was 8-1 and that means I have lifted the Captains Cup and continue the sequence of winning the cup in each decade this century so far.

From my point of view it was a good game and I hope all the new members enjoyed their first official game and banter in the pub. Roll on the new season.

MOM - Chris for his 3 goals and 3 assists.
