Duffers Cup Final

Written by Reuben Morley

A disappointing one, and certainly a game I really didn’t want to lose - especially with it being the Duffer Cup Final, where the loser gets to take home the trophy!

The Yellows started brightly and dominated the early stages, playing some great football. We were unfortunate not to go 1-0 up early, having put the ball in the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for apparently having just gone slightly over the line. A frustrating moment!

The Whites, though, worked extremely well as a team. They were defensively solid, hard-working and made life difficult for the Yellows throughout. Jonny pulled the strings brilliantly from the back, while Cush put in a tremendous shift on the left.

Having Dave Owen up front as an outlet ultimately proved to be a major difference. The Yellows lacked an out-and-out striker, while Dave's pace gave the Whites a constant threat in behind.

Against the run of play, Dave produced a wicked header to put the Whites 1-0 up. From there, the Yellows tried their hardest to get back into the game, but our play in the final third left plenty to be desired - although huge credit has to go to the Whites for an excellent defensive display.

Bren pulled off some great saves in the White goal, while Harvey and Paul were equally impressive for the Yellows. Mike Vicary also came agonisingly close, smashing a wicked effort against the crossbar.

Unfortunately, it just wasn't to be.

The Whites went on to add two more goals to complete a 3-0 victory, with Dave Owen's pinpoint finishing and blistering pace proving decisive on the night.

A tough one to take, but credit where it's due - the Whites defended brilliantly, worked incredibly hard and took their chances when they came.

Congratulations Bri! 3-0 winners and thoroughly deserving.

And on the bright side… I won my first trophy!
