Disclaimer: As Natasha Bedingfield once sang ‘these words are my own’, I’m not using A.I and I’ve had a few bevvies.
I must admit I wasn’t best pleased being drawn against the reigning double champion on my debut season. & when Bren threw the curveball of playing outfield I realised my fate of being GK on the coldest night of the year was set. Fortunately my Sons new found obsession with Spider-Man must have rubbed off on me, more on that later.
Gary kindly let me have choice, then he chose to be yellows (good old fashioned law of averages came in my favour it seems)
It felt like a slow start to the game, not a lot of clear cut chances in the opening with each team figuring each-other out. But then a nice bit of play from Andy fed Peter through on the left wing, and after a few majestic touches he finished into the corner, 1-0. Gary’s team pushed for a response, but unfortunately a few missed place passes on the counter kept the shot volume low.
Then came 2-0. Patient build up found Peter on the right wing with a tidy pass into Gary W, who glided sideways past two players & finished neatly with his left foot. A little fist bump celebration to eachother from across the pitch to confirm the false 9 approach had paid off, boss.
Yellows pushed on, Gary P coming out of goal and Tom pushing up found us outnumbered. But through gritty defending we restricted them to shots from difficult angles. This is when my Sons love of Spider-man came in handy & my reactions managed a few decent saves, cheers Son.
At this point Yellows were high pressing us with intent but Ed saw through it and chips a lovely pass down the wing to find Andy, who squared it wonderfully to Peter (I coulda swore he was next to me a moment ago) who finished superbly with a first time shot and sealed the win. 3-0.
With about 10 minutes to go came a barrage of chances from Jamie, Dave & Tom but credit to us Whites who could’ve switched off, the clean sheet seemed important and we dug deep!
Man of the match - proper team performance, 8/10s across the board but I felt Peter made a huge impact on both ends.
